Shopping in MD – tax free on qualifying merchandise.

Clothing and footwear priced less than $100 per item…

Will be exempt from Maryland’s 6 percent sales tax.

Smart Shopping Techniques for Tax Free Week:

If buying 2 pair of $99 shoes, for example, have them ring it up separately to save the 6% tax!

Don’t forget to use good common sense when you’re shopping during tax free week. For example, remember to compare prices at different retailers, and use coupons when you can.

In addition, don’t buy anything you really don’t need just because of Maryland’s tax free week. After all, the sales tax rate in Maryland is 6%, so that amount – plus any local sales tax, if applicable – is what you’d be saving. It’s entirely possible that you’ll save even more than that by shopping during the week before or the week after the tax free week event, so do your homework before heading out to the mall.

Keep in mind, too, that not all general merchandise items are included in the sales tax holiday. For example, accessories such as jewelry, watches, watchbands, handbags, handkerchiefs, umbrellas, scarves, ties, headbands, and belt buckles are not tax-exempt.
